The Story

My name is Tomás.  Like millions of other kids, I was hooked on the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender.  The groundbreaking series followed the story of a special character, The Avatar, who traveled to the Four Nations of his world in search of masters of the Four Elements.  He found a master of Water in the Inuit-inspired Water Nation, a master of Earth in the Imperial Chinese-inspired Earth Nation, and so on. Like millions of other kids, I wanted to be an Avatar.

Unlike all the others, I did.

3 years ago, I got in front of the show’s creators, Bryan & Mike to pitch them a 3-part idea of taking their narrative out of the show and into this world.

  1. The Research

  2. The Avatar Journey

  3. The White Lotus

1. research

“A group of Brown students [are] doing a group independent study course about Avatar.  It is incredibly exhaustive and ambitious. I’m not sure I could pass this class!”

- Bryan Konietzko, Avatar Series Co-Creator

The Avatar series is known for its rich world and vibrant culture.  A group of students and I created our own semester-long course to study the history, culture and tradition that inspired the show. Check out our research here and reach out for the syllabus.

2. Avatar Journey -

“Tomás and Gabriela from the White Lotus Fellowship are currently on their journey around the world, spreading the Avatar love and learning along the way.”

- Bryan Konietzko, Avatar Series Co-Creator

Like Sokka and Katara, my sister and I journeyed around the world to four nations in search of masters of the Four Elements in the first real-world Avatar quest.  We crowdfunded the trip with support from Bryan, Mike and the global Avatar fanbase.

We sailed through the Caribbean with a Tai Chi master [Water], wandered into a Yoga Guru in the Himalayan foothills [Fire], trained with Taoist monks at the Wudang Mountain [Earth], and hitchhiked through Japan to Zen temples [Air].

“No, Prince Zuko. Power in firebending comes from the breath, not the muscle.” - Uncle Iroh. We found a guru in India who taught us Fire in the breath.

The White Lotus brings together the research and the journey to allow anyone to begin their own Avatar adventure to master all four elements and bring balance to the world

3.The White Lotus -

“The Lost Scrolls of the White Lotus” Book

The stories of who we met, the places we traveled to and masters we trained under are chronicled in a book slated to be published mid-2019.  The book contains “scrolls,” like the one Katara found from the pirates, to help you basic bending techniques.

The White Lotus Community

Young Avatars master all Four Elements through monthly experiences hosted in their local community. Outer World experiences include rock climbing and bonfires. Inner World experiences include meditation and Tai Chi.

The white lotus

The White Lotus draws its name from the secret organization of masters by the same name.  In The Last Airbender show, The Order Of The White Lotus is tasked with finding, training and protecting each new Avatar.  Some even pass down their knowledge through hidden scrolls...
